Lightlife – No animals were harmed in the making of this meat

A couple weeks ago Lightlife contacted me and asked if I would like to try some samples of their products. Since I buy their tempeh all the time and I love it I thought it would be fun to try their other products. I don’t usually buy meat, I like to make seitan sausages at home (the process is somewhat similar to this) and a few times a year I will have a vegan chicken nugget but after trying the lightlife products I think I might have to change my tune. It is all so easy which means I can spend less time in the kitchen and more time thinking about all the things I want to do.

The first item I tried was the fakin’ bacon smoky tempeh strips on the side of some pancakes. They were perfect, not overly smoky and without the bitter taste that tempeh can have if you don’t cook it up right. I will get these again for sure since it is very similar to making your own tempeh bacon but no long marinating time. I can’t marinate things in the morning because I usually wake up ravenous and it is important for me to sleep for as long as possible. I really like that they don’t taste or look like bacon made from pigs but are instead just a happy vegan substitution.

Next we tried the chick’n style strips in a roasted pepper cashew cheese quesadillas. This is a product I never would have bought but we both really liked it. The strips are the perfect taste and texture, I don’t know why people even bother with eating birds when the vegan alternative works so well. These would be perfect to toss into stir frys or pad thai or really anything.  

Next I made empanadas with the smart ground which are just veggie protein crumbles. By the way, everything I tried was really high in protein if you are someone who is constantly exercising (not me) then you might want to check out some of these. The crumbles cooked up super fast and texture was spot on but they wasn’t a lot of flavor. This, for me, is nice because I can flavor things how I want. But they have a range of flavors too, like Italian, TexMex etc. I think it would be pretty easy to trick someone with this stuff, if only there were people I knew that didn’t know I was vegan but, if you can imagine, most people who know me know that part too so I am probably not going to be foolin anyone.

I still had smart ground left so I cooked it up with some poblanos and some rotel and made it the base for my nachos supreme along with some refried beans, tofutti cream cheese, food for lover’s queso, tomatoes and green onions. They were pretty much the best vegan nachos ever.

So I am pretty sold on Lightlife, the only thing I don’t like is that not all of their products are organic which I do prefer, especially when it comes to soy products. The tempeh is organic so I will keep buying a ton of that. Hopefully they are working on it and in the future more of their line will follow in that direction because I really like their stuff and it is available everywhere.

    How interesting! I never knew they made fake bacon (well they make everything nowadays….) Do they make vegan ribs? If not-that would be awesome.

    How about “Compassion Crumbles” for some vegan burger crumbles? They could have “Compassion Cutlets” as a companion product.

    To-fuggets. Yes, I know there are “chicken nuggets” already out there, but these would be CHICKFILA tofu nuggets, which would be totally the best ever and improve on the one and only meat I miss!

    so awesome on the Lightlife hook up! i know a bunch of their goodies are glutenous, but that doesn’t mean i can’t drool over your nachos, empanadas, and quesadillas. so yum! you know, even pre-vegan i ate vegan and veggie unchicken nuggets, corn dogs, things like that. i wasn’t even veggie and i just liked the taste sooo much better than the “real” thing. the meaty analogs are just so darn delicious, and while there are a few that are gluten-free, i do miss some of the deli slices and ground crumbles and such. i might have to pick up some of the Lightlife goodies for dan though, as he’s not gluten-free and would love the helloutta this stuff. w00t!

    my fake meatsies name would be fishless “fish” and i could call it “artiFISHial”. ha!

    around here we call faux chicken nuggets “sicken” (soy+chicken). that name probably wouldn’t get past a marketing department though :)

    I love lightlife! Probably my favorite of the fake meat companies though I don’t use them much. I actually love having hot dog parties with the veggie dogs and I put out a toppings bar, it’s such a great summer bbq thing though oddly I was never a fan of hot dogs in my meat eating days. I’ve used the ground crumbles actually in argentinean style empanadas for a potluck and my mom had come over so I had her taste test to see if my seasoning and everything was authentic, and she said it was really good without really even thinking twice. Somehow she ended up asking what I would eat because it hadn’t even occurred to her that it was fake meat. I was like “seriously???? wtf mom, you think I”d bring dead cow in my apartment and stir it around for other people to eat?” She was just like I don’t know…it tasted real. So yeah lol, a bit creepy if you think about it.
    Anyways, haha I like that “sicken” one. I was also thinking along the lines of a fat steak, seeing as I’m from Argentina, so that’s kind of a big deal there. Maybe False Mignon?

    I miss prosciutto and many other cured italian meats that you would eat in an antipasti dish, so I would have to say something called frosciutto would catch my attention for sure!
    I don’t try many fake-meat products but the bacon and nachos look too good to not give this stuff a try!!

    P.S. Where do you get food for lovers queso and what is it made of? I am pregnant and really craving nachos these days!

    I love those empanadas! Mmm. Never tried lightlife, but after that review I’m going to have to scrounge some up online or in a bigger city. I’m going to go with “vork chops” as in “vegan pork chops” :)

    Oh yea and morningstar makes veggie ribs that are pretty good. I make a pretty good prime tofu (prime rib) that could double as fileaux mignon (filet mignon) if made in a smaller size.. Also, if you have ever tried using shake and bake on your chicken substitute filet you will be in “pork chop” heaven. I used to use quorn naked chick’n cutlets when I was vegetarian.

    Growing up my mom used to throw beef, potatoes and carrots into the slow cooker and somehow it turned out amazing…I’ve yet to veganize it to my liking. So, I strongly suggest(/beg for) the “Almost Pot Roast” :)

    We add “-na” to everything we eat that resembles non-vegan food. Chick-na nuggets. Chees-na. Turk-na slices. Milk-na. One thanksgiving, I was making the tofurkey and accidentally called it “tofurk-na” … is that a double negative?

    Also, Brendan from the VNA invented the vegan turducken … calls it “Tofucken”. Haha
